The post of the day is this: Do your friends celebrate your success? Do you celebrate the success of others? A true friend will rejoice with you when you succeed. Recently, I had an encounter with a friend which left me scratching my head. I shared with them my new business card and shared how a simple conversation coupled with a long-term relationship had turned into a seven figure merger and acquisition. As a result, an opportunity came up for leadership in that company, which I accepted. This was met with a rousing thud and no real acknowledgment while displaying a dismissive attitude. While I didn’t expect a parade, there was some expectation of reciprocation as I believed I had been more than supportive of their significant career moves and successes.
What I believe I realized is some people are content to be a large fish in a small to medium pond. This in itself can lead to a scarcity mindset that if you are getting more than them it somehow diminishes their accomplishments. It is difficult to see what putting others down does to increase your influence on a global scale while learning to play in the ocean of opportunity.
To be clear, I am not talking about the teasing we do with our siblings and cousins at the family reunions. I believe we should always be supportive and happy for others success, even when they outpace our own. I do know it pays to be nice to everyone, whether on the way up or on the way down. It is amazing to me you meet some of the same people on the road of life going and coming. As an example, I find it ironic that a couple of the people who rejected me in the past are no longer a part of the organization I am now leading.
All this being said, I am still happy for my friend’s accomplishments. Their world outside of their business is settled with an inward focus and a small circle of influence. My goal and my intention for you is to go and make a impact on your world. Touch as many lives as you can. As my business partner, Timothy Chin, asked at a meeting last week, “Are you doing good while you are doing well?” Associate with people who stretch you and hold you accountable. Look forward to the BHAG (Big Hairy Audacious Goals) and conquer them. Reach behind you and give people a hand up!! And most of all, CELEBRATE SUCCESS wherever you find it!!
Make this your most successful week ever and go forth and PROSPER!!
